Tavolozza

Mario Schifano

Tavolozza is part of Mario Schifano’s exploration of the relationship between image, materiality, and contemporary visual culture. The work features a composition with a powerful gestural quality, built up through layers of paint, fields of white, and darker chromatic accents that allow the underlying support to partially show through. The reference to the painter’s palette takes on an almost meta-linguistic character here: the very tool of painting becomes the subject of the work. Drips, brushstrokes, and layering lend the surface a deliberately tactile and *informel* quality, highlighting the artist’s gesture and the creative process itself. Particularly significant is the contrast between the dominant white—which tends to obliterate and cover over images—and sudden bursts of color and black, which break up the surface and create points of visual tension. The work thus presents a dynamic form of painting in which gesture, erasure, and the memory of the image coexist. Overall, Tavolozza highlights a central characteristic of Schifano’s artistic language: the ability to challenge the boundary between figurative painting and abstraction, transforming an everyday object into a field for visual and material experimentation.
