The composition is dominated by a cluster of isolated buildings: a blue tower, a red structure, and two cylindrical tanks reminiscent of industrial architecture. These familiar elements are juxtaposed in an unreal way, as if belonging to a place more mental than real. The unstable balance of the forms, clustered on a rocky base, is immediately striking, along with the chromatic contrast between the buildings' saturated colors and the dramatic, cloud-filled sky. The almost theatrical, sunset-like light renders the scene motionless and suspended. The trees in the center introduce a vital presence, but they too seem frozen, as if frozen in a time that stands still. Palumbo moves in the wake of Metaphysical Painting: the space is constructed but uninhabitable, recognizable but alienating. The architecture becomes symbols of memory, isolation, and identity.
