John Bellany
John Bellany was born in Port Seton from a family of fishermen. In the 1960s, he attended the Edinburgh College of Art, where he got to know some artists such as Alexander Moffat and he gave his contribution to the renewal of Scottish art. After his studies, he obtained a scholarship that allowed him to travel across Europe, deepening the connection between the tradition of the great Northern masters and his Scottish experience. Later on, he moved to London to study at the Royal College of Art and, there, his work began to gain recognition.
His early works were influenced by Impressionism, but after a chain of traumatic personal events, including his divorce and some health issues related to alcoholism, his style became darker and more symbolic, revealing an approach to Expressionism, which he had already encountered during a trip to Germany. During the 1970s and 1980s, he taught at various schools, including Brighton College of Art and Goldsmiths’ College, while maintaining an intense and increasingly appreciated artistic output.
