Marc Chagall (1887–1985) was one of the leading figures of twentieth-century art, renowned for his visionary and deeply poetic visual language. Born in Vitebsk (present-day Belarus) into a Hasidic Jewish family, he studied in Saint Petersburg before moving to Paris. There he encountered the historical avant-gardes — Cubism, Fauvism, and Orphism — and developed a highly personal style that blended modern experimentation with cultural tradition.
His works are instantly recognizable for their lyrical use of color, floating figures, dreamlike compositions, and rich symbolic imagery. Themes such as love, memory, rural life, music, and Jewish spirituality permeate his oeuvre, often populated by flying lovers, fantastical animals, and fairy-tale landscapes.
Forced to flee France during World War II due to Nazi persecution, Chagall took refuge in the United States before eventually settling in the south of France after the war. Beyond painting, he worked extensively in printmaking (producing refined etchings and lithographs), stage design, mosaics, and monumental stained-glass commissions, including those for Reims Cathedral, the Hadassah Medical Center Synagogue in Jerusalem, and the Metropolitan Opera in New York.
An internationally celebrated artist, Chagall transformed his personal and cultural heritage into a universal visual language, leaving a lasting and influential legacy in modern art.
