Alessandro Tofanelli

The oil painting on canvas depicts a peaceful and isolated landscape. In the center, a large tree towers over a small, forgotten structure near the water. On the right, an old van is partially hidden among the tall vegetation. The sky is covered with light clouds, creating a calm and slightly melancholic atmosphere. The water reflects part of the scene, contributing to the sense of quiet and isolation.

Poet Derek Walcott stated that “islands can only exist if we have loved there.” Without a deep and personal connection, an island remains just a physical place, a piece of land surrounded by water, without a real soul. Its existence would thus be limited to material presence only, without acquiring a deep meaning or emotional dimension; like a place that does not really live, because it is not traversed by the experiences and emotions that make it unique to those who inhabit it or visit it with affection. The island thus becomes a mere space, lacking the breath that only human ties and emotional experiences can give it. Alessandro Tofanelli's islands are places where the painter has certainly loved and through which he expresses his inner landscape, of the soul, rooted now in memory and recalled to mind through the filter of his sensitivity. They are environments in which time seems to have stood still and where human presence is evoked through everyday objects: tables, chairs, a bicycle leaning against a tree, a rowboat abandoned in complete solitude, an old Volkswagen Beetle, objects, which Tofanelli seems to have saved from the risk of disappearing, collecting and protecting them like precious works in a timeless museum. These places, where nature is queen, are enveloped in a calm, metaphysical and perfect balance, preserved for the future, they evoke a feeling of nostalgia and protection.
