Hans Hartung
Hans Hartung (1904–1989) was one of the leading figures of twentieth-century European abstraction. Born in Leipzig, Germany, he showed an early interest in art and experimental painting. After studying in Leipzig and Dresden, he moved to Paris in the 1930s, where he engaged with avant-garde circles and developed a distinctive style characterized by dynamic marks, scratches, and intense color fields.
During the Second World War he joined the French Foreign Legion; seriously wounded in combat, he lost a leg, yet continued to paint with remarkable determination. After the war he became a central figure in Lyrical Abstraction and European Informel, standing out for his energetic gesture and a form of painting that translated emotions and inner tensions into rapid, vibrant signs.
In the 1950s and 1960s he gained wide international recognition, taking part in major exhibitions and receiving numerous awards. Settling in Antibes in the south of France, he worked until his final years, experimenting with new techniques and tools. His work had a lasting impact on postwar abstract painting.
