Enrico Baj
Enrico Baj (Milan, 1924 – Vergiate, 2003) was one of the most original and irreverent protagonists of post-World War II Italian art. A multifaceted artist, Baj explored painting, collage, and assemblage, developing an ironic, irreverent language that was profoundly critical of power and social conventions. After studying law and attending the Brera Academy, in the 1950s he joined the Nuclear Movement, which he founded with Sergio Dangelo, with the aim of transcending traditional artistic categories in favor of a new expressiveness linked to the atomic age. He later became interested in pataphysics, becoming a member of the Collège de 'Pataphysique in Paris, and forged relationships with leading figures of the international avant-garde such as Marcel Duchamp and Man Ray. His work is renowned for its use of diverse materials—buttons, trimmings, fabrics, found objects—which give rise to rich, theatrical, and highly material works. Among his best-known cycles are the "Generals," grotesque caricatures of military power, and works inspired by history and politics, such as "The Funeral of the Anarchist Pinelli," a testament to his civic commitment. With a distinctive and unconventional style, Baj successfully combined art and social criticism, establishing himself as a unique voice in the twentieth-century art scene. His works are now held in major international museums and collections, confirming his central role in the history of contemporary art.
