Jean Dubuffet (Le Havre, 1901 – Paris, 1985) was one of the most influential French artists of the twentieth century, known for revolutionizing the very concept of art through the valorization of spontaneous, non-academic expression. After a brief artistic training and an initial abandonment of painting to devote himself to commercial activity, Dubuffet returned to painting in the 1940s, developing a radical style far removed from traditional aesthetic conventions. Rejecting the idea of ​​codified "beauty," he favored humble materials and unconventional techniques, such as sand, tar, and plaster, creating textured and highly expressive surfaces. He is the founder of the concept of Art Brut, a term he uses to define artistic productions created outside of official cultural circuits, such as those of self-taught artists, psychiatric inmates, and outsiders. In 1948, he founded the Compagnie de l'Art Brut, helping to redefine the boundaries between art and non-art and profoundly influencing contemporary research. Among his most celebrated cycles are the "Hautes Pâtes," characterized by dense, textured impastos, and the vast "L'Hourloupe" project, a visual universe of cellular signs, flat colors, and labyrinthine forms that extend from painting to sculpture and architecture. In dialogue with the European avant-garde and close in spirit to figures such as Jean Fautrier and Enrico Baj, Dubuffet marked a decisive turning point in post-World War II visual culture, placing primary energy, imperfection, and expressive freedom at the center of art.
