Alighiero Boetti

At seventeen he discovered tantric art, Wols' watercolors and then Fontana's cuts seen at the Galatea gallery in Turin. His gaze is already turned to non-European cultures, especially Eastern, Middle and Far Eastern and African cultures. A great traveler, he was fascinated by the figure of his 18th century ancestor, the Dominican monk Giambattista Boetti, a missionary in Caucasian lands under the name of 'Prophet Mansur'.

At twenty he painted oil landscapes influenced by the Russian painter Nicolas De Staël. He studies and practices engraving in Paris. In the land of France in Vallauris, where the artist went to buy some ceramics to resell in Italy, he met his future wife Annemarie Sauzeau, it was 1962.

In 1971, following an innate interest in intellectual nomadism and distant cultures, he visited Afghanistan and chose Kabul as his second homeland. There the work on the series of Maps began: world maps embroidered by Afghan women, in which each nation is represented by the colors of its flag.
Within the Maps, as well as in other cycles that accompany his artistic journey (the compositions of letters, Biro, Alternando da uno a cento and vice versa...), Boetti develops the idea of a collective, open and procedural creativity, in in which the artist designs the works but delegates the manual execution to third parties, who are guided by rules established by him. The mental aspect remains a priority within the artistic process, so most of his works combine formal beauty with a logical structuring, often based on the development of a real code or reading system.
In his production - variable in materials, techniques and supports - Boetti has tried to overcome the usual categorisations, starting from the very concept of identity. From works on the double, such as the fake Gemelli self-portrait of '68 (echo of Arthur Rimbaud's "je est un autre"), to participatory works, Boetti undermines the idea of creative, cultural, linguistic and political unity.
